Long Island, New York: Name applied by the Dutch in reference to its long and narrow conformation, "Lange Eylandt." During Governor Fletcher's administration, by act of General Assembly of New York, 1693, the name of Nassau was decreed as a Dutch compliment to Prince Maurice of Nassau. It was not favorably received by the settlers and by common consent they used Long Island.
