Kanawha River, West Virginia: From a tribe of Indians (branch of the Nanticokes), evoluting in its spelling through Conoys, Conoise, Canawese, Cohnawas, Canaways, to Kanawha. The stream is called "the Great Conoway or Wood's River" in Wyman's map of the British Empire, 1770.
