Euphrates: A name which has a long history. Euphrates is merely a Greek adaptation of the Persian name Hufrat or Ufratu. The latter Persian form, Phrat, or Frata, has again been converted by the Arabs into Farat, the "sweet water," so as to make the name significant in Arabic. The upper course of the Euphrates is still called the Frat.
