Escorial: A celebrated building in Spain, situated twenty seven miles northwest of Madrid, containing a monastery, palace, church, and mausoleum of the Spanish sovereigns. Derives its name from the neighboring village El Escorial, from the scoria or cinders of some abandoned iron works.
