Elephanta: An island six miles from Bombay, is locally called Gharipuri, the "place of caves." The Portuguese name Elephanta is derived from the colossal figure of an elephant carved on the rock, guarding the entrance to a magnificent cave-temple, which dates from the Eighth Century.
