Dowager: Strictly speaking, a dowager is an endowed widow; i.e., one who has a dower from her late husband, or who has property brought by her to her husband on marriage ("dowry") and settled on herself after his decease. In practice the name "dowager" is applied to any widowed lady of title, to distinguish her from the wife of the present holder of the title.
