Berlin: The capital of Germany, is a name the meaning of which has been much discussed. The name is probably Wendish, either from berle, "uncultivated ground," or, as Krebs thinks, from barlin, a "shelter," or "place of refuge"; or according to Kloden, an "enclosure or field"; while Vilovski suggests brljina, "a pool," which conforms to the local conditions.
