Gnu, or Wildebeest. A singular African antelope now nearly extinct. Its height is about four feet and it attains a length of nine feet. Both sexes are horned, the horns nearly meeting on the forehead, then bending downward and outward with a sharp upward turn. The muzzle is broad like that of an ox; the neck short and surmounted by a mane of bristly hair; the withers are high, and the tail is long and hairy like that of a horse. Between the fore legs is a pendulous hairy extension of the dewlap like that on the buffalo. The feet and the head resemble those of the buffalo, while the mane, tail, and general form are horse-like, probably suggesting the name "horned horse" by which it is also known.
