Bloodhound. A variety of hound or hunting dog with long, smooth, pendulous ears, remarkable for its keenness of scent which has been developed by long and careful breeding. Through this abnormally developed sense it is able to follow the track of a man or other animal, even though the trace is old, obscure, or partly effaced by the tracks of other creatures. Bloodhounds were formerly used in southern Unitee States to track fugitive slaves, and are still used by police authorities to trace fugitives and missing people.
