Barbary Ape. A terrestrial species of ape, or tailless monkey, of the size of a large cat, remarkable for docility. It is grouped with the macaques. In color it is light yellowish-brown below with the naked parts of the face flesh colored. It inhabits Morocco, Algeria, and the Rock of Gibraltar, being the only European monkey, though probably not indigenous. It has been the "showman's ape" from time immemorial.
