Virgil, Publius Virgilius Maro. Roman poet. Born near Mantua in 70 B.C. Found patrons in Maecenas and Augustus, who restored to him his estate. He died in Brundusium, on his return from a visit to Greece. Virgil's chief works were "The Eclogues" or "Bucolics," "The Georgics," and the "Aeneid." The "Aeneid" has been translated by Dryden, Conington, William Morris, and others. Virgil died in 19 B.C.
