Sophocles (sof'o-klez). A famous Athenian tragic poet. Was born in 495 B.C. He succeeded Aeschylus in his improvement of the drama, and raised it to its highest pitch of excellence in Greece. We possess but seven of his plays, two of which belong to the trilogy of Oedipus. Died 406 B.C.
