Reed, Thomas B. A Prominent legislator. Born in Portland, ME, October 18, 1839. Educated at Bowdoin College. Studied law, and began practice in 1865. During the war, was acting assistant paymaster in the Western River Navy. He entered the Maine House in 1868, and the Senate in 1870. Was sent to Congress in 1877, where he remained until 1899. He gradually became a leader of the Republican members, and was chosen speaker of the 51st Congress, in which he made the famous new rule that all members present should be counted to make a quorum, whether voting or not. Retired from Congress in 1899, and died in 1902.
