Orlando, Vittorio Emanuel. Italian statesman. Born in 1860. He came into special prominence during the period of Italy's participation in the First World War. He was minister of justice in the Slandra cabinet, and minister of the interior in the Boselli cabinet. Upon the resignation of Boselli, ensuing upon the great disaster to the Italian arms at the Battle of Caporetto, Orlando was made premier, October 31, 1917. Under his leadership, the Italian government prepared for successful resistance to the powerful Austrian attack of June, 1918, and for the victorious offensive campaign, October 24-November 4, which shattered the military power of Austria and greatly hastened the triumph of the allied cause. In January, 1919, Premier Orlando headed the Italian delegation to the peace conference at Versailles.
