Melanchthon, Philip. Born in 1497. German reformer. Studied under Reuchlin, and was appointed professor at Wittenberg at an early age, thus becoming acquainted with Luther. He drew up the Confession of Augsburg, of which he sent a copy to the patriarch of Constantinople, inviting is adhesion. By his moderation as well as his writings, did much to help the Reformation. Melanchthon died in 1560.
