Michael VIII (Paleologus). Born in 1234. Having been crowned emperor at Nicea with John Lascaris, regained Constantinople from the Latins in 1261, and ordered his colleague to be blinded, for which he was excommunicated and did public penance; attempted to unite the Eastern and Western Churches at the Council of Lyon (1274), and subsequently defeated a French invasion. Died 1282.
