Maurice of Nassau. Prince of Orange, son of William of Orange. "The Silent," was born in 1567. Became Stadtholder of the United Provinces, and head of the army in 1587. Successfully carried on the struggle against Spain; refused peace in 1598, but consented to a truce in 1609. Afterwards, supported the Gomarists against the Remonstrants, and put to death Barneveldt. Concluded a treaty with France and England just before his death in 1625.
