Julius II, Pope (Cardinal Giuliano della Revere). Born in 1443. Distinguished as a warrior and patron of the arts. Became Pope in 1503. He endeavored to extend the papal territory and, after driving Cesare Borgia from the Romagna, formed the league of Cambrai with Maximilian and Louis XII against Venice (1508). After the submission of the republic, he turned his arms against France (1510). In 1511, the Holy League was formed, and the French army driven back over the Alps. Died 1513.
