Hardy, Thomas. Novelist, educated as an architect. Born in Dorsetshire in 1840, the scene of his novels being laid in the south of England, the early Wessex. Hardy's chief works are "Desperate Remedies," "Under the Greenwood Tree," "Far from the Madding Crowd," "The Trumpet Major," "The Woodlanders," "The Mayor of Casterbridge," and "Wessex Tales," "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," etc.
