Hayes, Rutherford Birchard. The 19th president of the United States, succeeding Grant. Was born in Ohio, 1822. Practiced law in Cincinnati. Married in 1852, Lucy Ware Webb. He supported Scott in 1852, Fremont in 1856, and Lincoln for the presidency. He entered the army as major of the 23rd Ohio Infantry, and participated in the campaigns of West Virginia and the battles around Winchester. Was severely wounded at South Mountain. Elected to Congress from Ohio in 1864. Twice governor of Ohio. Nominated for the presidency by the Republican Convention at Cincinnati, June 1876, in opposition to S. J. Tilden, of New York; took his seat March 4, 1877. Died 1893.
