Handel, George Frederick. The foremost composer of oratorio music. Born in Halle, Germany, in 1685. After producing some minor operas in Italy, he settled in England in 1712, where he became chapel-master to George I. In 1738 appeared his oratorio of "Saul," and four years later his most sublime conception, "The Messiah." Died 1759.
