Hopkinson, Francis. Born in 1737. American writer, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Wrote "The Battle of the Kegs" in 1778, "The Pretty Story in 1774, "The Political Catechism" in 1777, and other works in prose and verse. Died 1791. His son, Joseph (died in 1842), was judge of the United States District Court, and wrote "Hail Columbia!"
