Hector, Charles, Count d'Estaing. Born in 1729. French admiral. After serving in the army in India, under the Marquis de Bussy, and being made prisoner at the siege of Madras, he entered the navy and led an expedition to Sumatra, capturing several English forts. Placed in command of a squadron sent to aid the United States against England, he captured the Isle of Grenada, but ultimately met with reverses, and returned to France in disgrace. He was guillotined during the Revolution in 1794.
