Gray, Thomas. An English poet. Born in London, 1716. Educated at Cambridge, in which university he became professor of modern literature in 1768. His "Odes" occupy a high rank in English poetry, and his well-known "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" (1749) is one of the finest compositions of its kind in the language. Died 1771.
