Gould, Jay (1836-1892), an American capitalist, was born at Roxbury, New York, and educated at Hobart College. He began his career as a surveyor, but soon became interested in railroad stocks, and by their manipulation amassed a fortune. He was the founder of the Gould system of railroads, which later, under the management of his son, George J., was greatly extended. In 1869 Gould's firm cornered the supply of gold in New York and caused a financial panic on September 24.
