Euler, Leonhard. Mathematician. Born in Basel in 1707. Was invited by Catherine II to Russia in 1727, and taught mathematics at Petrograd. In 1741 he went to Berlin, but returned to Petrograd in 1766. His writings are numerous. Died 1783.
