Eiffel (ef-fel'), Gustave. An eminent French engineer. Eiffel was born at Dijon in 1832. He early obtained a reputation for bridge construction. Eiffel designed the great Garabit viaduct, and also the enormous locks for the Panama Canal. Gustave Eiffel's most noted work is the gigantic iron tower in Paris which bears his name.
