Epictetus. A Stoic philosopher of the 1st century. Born at Hierapolis in Phrygia. Epictetus was bought as a slave by Epaphroditus, a favorite of Nero. When emancipated, he lived at Rome until banished by Domitian, and then became a teacher at Nicopolis in Epirus. Epictetus' lectures were transcribed by his pupil, Arrian.
