Dawson, Sir John William. Geologist and naturalist. Born at Pictou, Nova Scotia, 1820. He studied in Edinburgh, and distinguished himself as a paleontologist. Published "Story of the Earth and Man," "Origin of the World," and "Geology and History." Dawson called in question the Darwinian theory as to the origin of species. For many years he was chancellor of McGill University, and one of the most noted of Canadian educators. Died at Montreal in 1899.
