Vittoria Colonna. The most celebrated poetess of Italy. Born at Marino in 1490. At 17 she was married, and after her husband's death, in the Battle of Pavia, found her chief consolation in solitude and the cultivation of her poetic genius. Her poems were chiefly devoted to the memory of her husband. Vittoria Colonna died in 1547.
