Connaught, Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of. Third son of Queen Victoria, born in 1850. He was educated for the army at Woolwich, became a cadet in 1866, lieutenant in 1868, and captain in 1871. In 1874 he was created duke of Connaught and Strathern, and earl of Sussex. He served in Egypt in 1882. Was made general in 1893, field marshal in 1902, and inspector-general in 1904. From 1911 to 1916 he was governor-general of Canada.
