Balboa (bal-bo'-a), Vasco Nunex de. A Spaniard, and one of the first Europeans to visit the West Indies. Born 1475. He established a colony on the Isthmus of Panama, and discovered the Pacific Ocean. He was accused of treasonable designs, and put to death by the Spanish governor of Darien, Pedrarias Davila, in 1517.
