Bowles, Samuel. A distinguished American journalist. Born at Springfield, MA, February 9, 1826. From 1844 until his death in 1878, he was editor of the "Springfield Republican," founded by his father. Under his management the paper became one of the foremost journals in the country, and is now noted for its comprehensive news, its literary taste, and its intelligent views of public affairs.
