Anselm, Saint, born in 1033. Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of William Rufus and Henry I, to which post he was summoned from his position as Abbot of Bec in Normandy. He was a man of great piety and intellectual power, and firmly resisted the efforts of the king to despoil the Church of her dignity or revenues. He died at Canterbury in 1109.
