Artevelde, Jacob van, popular Flemish leader in the 14th century. Assisted Edward III in his French wars, and for nine years was practically ruler of Flanders. He determined to convert his country into a kingdom, and offered the crown to the Prince of Wales. This led to a tumult in which Artevelde was slain, 1345.
