Athelstan (ath'el-stan), or Aethelstan, one of the ablest of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Born about 895, succeeded his father, Edward the Elder, 925. In 937 he gained a great victory at Brunanburh over the Danes, Scots, etc., and reigned over all the island except Cumbria, Wales, Cornwall, and Scotland, which were tributary to him. Died without issue, 940.
