Vare, legiones redde: Varus, give back my legions. (A frequent exclamation of Caesar Augustus when he thought of the defeat and slaughter of Quinctilius Varus with three legions by the Germans. Often used of a commander who has recklessly sacrificed troops, or of a financier who has wasted funds.)
